FIRST AID COURSE – MALTESER 10 MAR 2012

This well organised and well-advertised course unfortunately started with only 3, yes that is correct 3 students……

Gaby Taylor, Dean Taylor and Mareike Wetzel.

It started with a kiss….(of life that is).  No in all honestly we were greeted by Herr Rode from the Malteser. A very sympathetic chap who instantly set the right mood for the day.

Theory was first on the agenda, talking about why we are to care for people at times of need, then more importantly how we go about doing it correctly.

After a good number of hours talking and discussing many types of injury we moved onto CPR with the resusi Anni – Now this part was really interesting, learning how to resuscitate by using the usual 30 compressions to 2 breaths method.  After we had practiced a number of times, we then went through a number of methods of how to apply CPR.

Next was the scenario of a motorcycle accident.  First we had to learn how to stabilise the casualty then the delicate process of removing the riders safety helmet. This was not as easy as initially thought… Holding the casualties head….(mine) which weighs approx. 5kg until the helpers can lay it comfortably in the same position proved quite amusing.

Again there were a number of practises to ensure we were all competent in the said procedures. We then moved onto how to stop bleeding and how to apply different types of bandage.  This varied from the application of a compression bandage to a finger bandage.

This process was extremely amusing, there were bandages everywhere once we had all finished wrapping each other up.

Now…..time for a bit of Defibrillation…This was my personal favourite of the whole course. The equipment that is available today is simply outstanding.  Once you have confirmed the need for a Defibrillator, it is simply attached by sticking 2 electro pads  then all you do is press start.

The machine tells you exactly what to do and when…brilliant and very exciting.
